此法对清军来说可谓一举双得，既吃饱了自己，又饿死了敌人，没了城外的人力资源和粮食援助，南昌很快就成为了一座真正意义上的孤城，四周全成了无人区，只能日日坐吃山空，饥饿很快就在全城蔓延。
到了此时，城内已经开始出现了很严重的缺粮状况，城中的米价就一下子由一石三两涨到十两，二十两，三十两，随着时间的推移，一石粮食几乎几乎涨到了六十两银子。这一价格大大超过了往年南昌市场上的粮食最高价。
南昌城中的存粮正在以一种极快的的在减少，所有粮食优先守城的军卒和壮丁，老弱百姓们只能将城中池塘污水上的浮萍捞上来吃掉用以充饥，或者吃城中的树皮，无论军民，都将房屋门窗拆下当燃料，即便到了这种时候，阖城的军民百姓们依旧顽强的坚守着这座城池。
清兵早有明令；兵到即降者不杀一人，抵抗一日杀全军，二日杀民半数，三日以上鸡犬不留。
已经抵抗数月的他们，深深的知道，一旦城破，绝对无法幸免，城外死去的数百万男女老少就是他们的下场。与其到时候被鞑子淫暴而死，不如死扛到底，兴许还有一线生机。
